Background and Passion for Service
We sat down with Charri Joe to discuss her excitement about the Hope Center. With over 18 years in the nonprofit sector, primarily focused on supporting women and children facing substance use disorders, Charri has a passion for working with young people. She believes that positive role models can significantly impact young lives, stating, “If you can be a positive influence to someone before they become an adult… it makes a big difference.” Her commitment to Rod’s House stems from a desire to create a supportive environment where young people feel valued.

Importance of Empowerment and Listening
Charri emphasized the importance of listening to young people and treating them as equals: “When a child speaks, you listen.” Her upbringing instilled in her the value of being heard, which she applies in her work. By treating young people with respect and acknowledging their experiences, she fosters an environment where young people can thrive and develop essential life skills.

Addressing the Needs of Homeless Youth
The Hope Center plays a crucial role in providing stability for youth and young adults experiencing homelessness. Charri explains, “We’re providing a safe foundation… they will eat every single day that they’re here, three meals a day and two snacks.” By addressing these basic needs, the center allows young people to focus on their goals and aspirations, alleviating the stress of survival.

Comprehensive Support Services
The Hope Center offers a range of support services tailored to the unique needs of each resident, including life skills training, educational support, and assistance in finding stable housing. “We have an unlimited amount of resources that we just need to tap into,” she notes, highlighting the individualized approach to helping each young adult on their path to independence. Together, with the support of our community, the Hope Center aims to create a brighter future for youth and young adults in Yakima.
